INTRODUCTIONA gentleman on the Internet made a statement about “the tremendous technological advances achieved by modern man,” however, he observed incorrectly that “There has been no equivalent HUMAN technology (philosophy) to get a handle on war, pollution, corruption, slavery and all the rest of the stuff that really matters.” Theosophy, literally “godlike wisdom,” which has been around for approximately 2 millennia, provides the “equivalent HUMAN technology (philosophy).” All that remained was for humanities collective intelligence to evolve to the point where it could grasp the more abstruse metaphysics, which it has done, and utilize the science contained within. 1. The following statement by Dr Berrenda Fox, holistic practitioner of the Avalon Wellness Center in Mt. Shasta, California illustrates the effects of the higher 5 rays of energy that have been impacting humanity, as well as the earth and the rest of the solar system for many years. “Several years ago in Mexico City there was a convention of geneticists from around the world, and the main topic was the DNA change occurring. The scientific explanation is that humanity is mutating into something for which the end result is not yet known. According to geneticists, there are major changes, mutations occurring, and they don’t know what humanity is changing into. There are children being born today with 3 strands of DNA, and they are naturally telepathic [highly evolved souls also began incarnating en mass about 25 years ago to help humanity]. The news media has not been informed of the changes, because the scientific community feels that it would frighten the population.” Only the more metaphysically aware individuals are able to envision the cultural changes that are imminent. Changes in our consciousness, such as telepathy, remote viewing, conscious out-of-body travel, telekinesis, and an immune system that keeps us free of disease will bring about changes in politics, education, economics, justice, and the end of the military/industrial complex as we know it today. 2. The "Cabal," and the “Satellite Government”/“Shadow Government” are making the transition difficult at the end of the Age of Pisces, but humanity will survive with a little help from our galactic brothers & sisters and the Great White Brotherhood to live in peace in the Golden Age of Aquarius. The opiate of the Cabal is fear, and they are responsible for the mental & emotional turmoil in the world. This utilization of fear resulted from the bogus education humanity has received for centuries, religious & secular. The literal interpretation of the Only Begotten Son of God with Justinian's Anathemas Against Preexistence, and the accidental universe (Big Bang) theory/philosophy of agnostic scientists, along with Darwinism, created and perpetuate the fear of death. The Perennial Philosophy of the twin doctrines of Karma & Reincarnation were tossed aside in the western world, and modern science stumbled backward, totally discounting the existence of masters and adepts, past & present. This denial of the existence of the foregoing wise and knowledgeable souls, of course, leaves the agnostic psychologists, philosophers and scientists at the apex of human understanding, knowledge & wisdom, which has resulted in the very sorry state of human affairs in the world, along with the destruction of the environment, nature and wild life. 3. The metaphysically illiterate world bankers, intellectual elite, world leaders, public servants, Oil Cartel, corporate CEOs, the Vatican, & covert intelligence agency operatives in the world should fear death, because of their perpetual control and ravaging of humanity, for they will face the "throne of necessity" and the "three Fates" or "daughters of Necessity" after death (see below or on page 4 in my paper), just as surely as everyone else does, and discover the fate & justice of selecting the role that they will play in their next incarnation. They will reap what they have sown several times over, because the law of karma is an axiom or genuine law of the mind which, out of necessity, produces harmony. 4. The cabal should realize, from current scientific evidence that the coming Age of Enlightenment, as prophesied, is real, and that they cannot prevent it from occurring. The pseudo-educated fools are terrorizing humanity, but should be cognizant of the metaphysical evidence, as indicated above in 2 & 3, i.e., that the Perennial Philosophy of the twin doctrines of karma & reincarnation are real. So, to all of you abusive world leaders and others named above, I offer you some advice. Take an accounting now for your past actions and alleviate humanity’s suffering, otherwise there will be possible severe consequence near term (when the masses wake up), as well as after death and in your future lives. The “throne of necessity” awaits your karmic “choice.” Humanity must forgive those who come forth with the truth in order to make amends and alleviate the pain they have caused. Do not seek revenge against them, because you’ll be weaving discordant energy into your own karmic web. They’ll reap retribution in future lives, and some of them will be taken down into the caverns of the earth to astral hell before they too are eventually, out of necessity, drawn back into the “whorl of Necessity” to fulfil their “irreversible” karmic “choice” given at the Life Review. 5. "You have rights antecedent to all earthly governments; rights that cannot be repealed or restrained by human laws; rights derived from the Great Legislator of the Universe." -- John Adams… Freedom is derived from the “Great Legislator,” and technically ordains that everyone is free to live their own life as they choose to live it, so long as they don’t interfere in anyone else’s life, which is based on karmic law that is also derived from the “Great Legislator.” Hence, everyone should appropriately tend to their own business, which is, primarily, mastering the technique of daily living and achieving their soul’s purpose for this particular incarnation. Judge not and love one another are prime directives for every human being and there are no exceptions. 6. The endless “war on terror” & the “Patriot Act” are, in reality, Machiavellian attempts to eliminate freedom forever & to establish total control under the cunning guise of a more secure, patriotic “homeland.” As James Madison said: “War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes. And armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few. In war, too, the discretionary power of the Executive is extended. Its influence in dealing out offices, honors, and emoluments is multiplied; and all the means of seducing the minds, are added to those of subduing the force of the people. No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.” There is never any justification for torture, nor is there any justification for warrantless spying on citizens (dissenters or otherwise). The Bush administration violated their oaths of office utilizing terrorism to justify the Patriot Act, a terrorism covertly abetted to by themselves on 9/11 according to the spiritual hierarchy (the Biblical Order of Melchizedek). Members of the Legislative Branch who voted for the Patriot Act followed mind-numbingly along and are also guilty of not up-holding their oaths of office. The Bush administration lied about its reasons for the pre-emptive war on Iraq, and is responsible for the deaths (murder) of over 100,000 Iraqi citizens and soldiers, along with thousands of dead or maimed American & Coalition soldiers; it authorized the torture of prisoners (euphemistically called "enemy combatants") in violation of the Geneva Convention, authorized the tampering of the electoral process in the 2004 Presidential election, and instigated the outing of a CIA agent (Valerie Plame). These are all impeachable offences, however, the “intellectual elites” of the “Lapdog Media,” who “are the tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes,” have investigated nothing. It’s going to be a very rough road ahead if those psychologically sick fools in the White House, along with their compatriots in Congress and the Judicial Branch, aren’t tossed out of office soon. 7. There are a multitude of souls incarnating in the world that are helping, in all fields of endeavor, to wake up the general mass of humanity from the brainwashing and negative conditioning of humanities consciousness over the centuries. See LINKS for a listing of some of these dedicated souls. Metempychosis (Evolution of the soul) © 2004 by Q. Dean Sloan First and foremost it must be understood that Webster’s definition of metempsychosis is incorrect in that it states in part: “the passing of a soul after death into some other body, either human or animal.” This misinterpretation of platonic thought is due to the mainstream academic rank’s failure to acknowledge that Plato wrote esoterically for a select few, just as Jesus spoke to his disciples in secret. Plato had been “initiated into the Mysteries” and, consequently, was under oath to veil his teachings. The following statement by “Er” in Plato’s “The Myth of Er” shall help to clarify this. Each soul chooses the kind of life it wants for its next incarnation based on its Life Review (the Book of Life/akashic record is seen) with the Lords of Karma,* and Er said: “For the most part they [each soul] followed the habits of their former life. And so he saw the soul that had once been Orpheus choose the life of a swan;” (whereas the swan actually symbolized the beauty & serenity of the life of a “Master”) “it [Orpheus’ soul] was unwilling to be born of a woman, because it hated all women after its death at their hands.” This veils the non-necessity of an “Adept” or “Master” to incarnate again, and hating all women is incongruous, to say the least, since a “Master” is love & compassion personified. Er also said that “he saw a swan and other singing birds choose the life of a man [men/women].” This refers to the esoteric nature of the bird kingdom as being an intermediate/transferring kingdom for angels seeking to incarnate into the human kingdom, and is also the esoteric reason for the depiction of wings on angels. Technically speaking, it is impossible for the human soul (“crown chakra”)† to go backward in evolution (petals close back down over the “jewel in the lotus”), much less to disappear completely. “Masters” are fully “clairvoyant” (referred to in the “Bible” as “another sight”) when out of the body, and have never observed any human soul incarnating into an animal fetus, nor seen a crown chakra over the head of any animal. Also, no animal has the necessary physical apparatus, endocrine glands, nervous system, brain, etc. that correspond to the etheric body of the human soul with its associated chakras (etheric centers of force). It is possible, however, for a human soul to overshadow or merge with an animal soul, and to experience & influence what the animal experiences (see Robert A. Monroe's Far Journeys for examples of this, and for a much needed, fresh perspective on the other side of life which, after death, begins with the astral plane). * This is explained within the metaphor of the “spindle of Necessity”: The “shaft” of the spindle corresponds to the Life Force of God. The “whorl” corresponds to the earth (and all life therein) created as a result of the Life Force spiraling into existence out of necessity. It is necessitated by karma and because “the interaction between spirit and matter results in spiral, cyclic existence” (A Treatise on Cosmic Fire). The “three Fates” or “daughters of Necessity” correspond to the Lords of Karma that are compelled by God, out of necessity, to justly carry out His will. “The Law of Karma, or cosmic Fixation, is the law of the cosmic mental plane, and controls the corresponding law in our system” (A Treatise on Cosmic Fire). The tasks of the “three Fates” or Lords of Karma thus follow: “Lacheis” reviews the past life with the soul, after which appropriate options, “patterns of life” are presented. The soul “chooses the life which then shall of necessity be his.” “There was no choice of quality of character since of necessity each soul must assume a character appropriate to its choice.” The “quality of character” “Thersites” assumed was like a “buffoon” and metaphorically symbolized by “putting on the form of an ape.” “Clotho” then ratifies the choice. And finally, “Atropos” inserts the “irreversible” choice into the whorl of necessity. The soul then bows, saluting the “throne of necessity,” and departs to await the time allocated before its “voluntary plunge” (Plotinus) into the fetus. In the Bible, Job refers to this choice of the soul by stating: “If a man die, shall he live again? All the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come” (Job 14: 14). † Major etheric force center (right above the head) in the human aura/energy field or causal body; its intensification or blazing forth results in a very heavenly experience, and a halo is sometimes seen around the head. The “jewel in the lotus” has been poetically referred to as a “spark of light within a greater light.” The Parable of the Tree (Job 14: 7-13) The esoteric meaning of the metaphors is given below to show that verse 14 (above) was not taken out of context. 7 “For there is hope of a tree [soul], if it be cut down, that it will sprout again [incarnate], and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.” 8 “Though the root [personality] thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock [body] thereof die in the ground;” 9 “Yet through the scent [soul] of water [Creator] it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant” [voluntarily plunge into the fetus]. 10 “But man [personality] dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost [personality/body dies], and where is he?” [rhetorical]. 11 “As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and dryeth up:” 12 “So man [personality] lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they [personalities] shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.”
13 “O that thou wouldest hide me [soul] in the grave, that
thou wouldest keep me secret [astral life], until thy wrath [life review]
be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, [task of “Atropos” in
the “Myth of Er”] and remember me!” [He will, out of necessity]. Secondly, the esoteric doctrine of the Creation of “Eve” from the “rib” of “Adam” is as follows: The metaphor of the rib/DNA ordains that Adam/gender/Homo sapiens & Eve/gender are the “same” or “equal.” Men must cease the subjugation of women, and realize that the roles they play will be reversed in succeeding incarnations and reap retribution for their injustice. They must realize that the knowledge/wisdom acquired by any soul is retained and that, if the soul’s karmic “choice” at the life review is female, will not be inferior because of it. The majority of people are unaware of the underlying metaphysics that are the foundation of all religions, and the Catholic See in Rome, with its superficial pontification, is responsible for much of the erroneous, theological dogma that has kept the major religions from uniting and making progress. The inculcation of exoteric (literal) theological doctrines upon Christians and Catholics over the centuries has prevented them from realizing that the dogma of one life to live with an only begotten Son/world savior who will release them from their karmic obligations is bogus theology, and ignores the root basis for our individual existence, i.e., the “crown chakra” in the human aura or etheric body, which is not created at conception or birth, and evolves through reincarnation over many lifetimes. The number of lives varies considerably depending on the amount of unconditional love expressed in each life. The “petals” in the crown chakra unfold slowly over a long series of lives, and we achieve perfection only when they have completely unfolded. There have been many souls (primarily in the Mid-East, India & Tibet) who achieved perfection prior to the birth of Jesus (Thoth, Enoch, Siddhartha, Maitreya, Socrates, and many others unknown in the West). The "only begotten Son” of God is a metaphysical non-sequitur, and esoterically refers to the human soul that is created by God.‡ Thus, everyone has “everlasting life,” due to the immortal nature of the soul. A belief in God and living a life of goodwill toward your fellowman will provide you with an enjoyable, long rest between lives (part of which is spent in heaven without the encumbrance, or energy connection to, the lower self (personality) on the astral plane-loss of memory is explained below), and reward you with happiness in the succeeding incarnation. Conversely, living a life of ill will toward your fellow man will leave you with no respite on the other side, and hasten an incarnation into which you will reap retribution. The foregoing is based on the “Moral Law of Cause and Effect,” which governs the human mind, and is the foundation of positive thinking. “The physical body is formed according to the etheric mold supplied by the agents+ of the Lords of Karma,” and reflects the age and karma of the soul. ‡ The esoteric nature of the “Trinity,” and the “Law of Correspondence and Analogy” illustrates this below. + The “agents” are the “four Devarajas” who rule over the four elements of earth, water, air, and fire, with their indwelling nature-spirits and essences. . .” “. . .it is the Devarajas who, having command of the elements of which the etheric double must be composed, arrange their proportion [percentage of substance of each sub-plane] so as to fulfill accurately the intention of the Lipika [karmic Lords].” The Lipika “weigh the deeds of each personality [during the life review] when the final separation of its principles [lower mental & astral bodies/personality] takes place at the end of its astral life, and give as it were the mold of an etheric double exactly suitable to its karma for the man’s next birth” (The Astral Plane: 23, 122 & 123)1. The foregoing is the technical metaphysical rationale for our loss of memory regarding previous existence. It is veiled in “The Myth of Er” where, after the life review, the soul is eventually “encamped by the Forgetful River, whose water no pitcher can hold. And all were compelled to drink a certain measure of its water, and those who had no wisdom to save them drank more than the measure. And as each man drink he forgot everything.” The foregoing esoterically refers to the acquisition of a new astral (water/emotions) body as part of the process of the plunge into the fetus (the “till my change come” referred to by Job in Chapter 14:14). The third eye is the director of energy or force, thus an instrument of the will or Spirit; it is responsive only to that will as controlled by the Son-aspect, the revealer of the love-wisdom nature of gods and man, and it is therefore the sign of the white magician.
Third, the reflex action of the pineal gland itself. As these three types of energy, or the vibration of these three centers, begin to contact each other, a definite interplay is set up. This triple interplay forms in time a vortex or center, which finds its place in the center of the forehead, and takes eventually the semblance of an eye looking out between the other two. It is the eye of the inner vision, and he who has opened it can direct and control the energy of matter, see all things in the Eternal Now, and therefore be in touch with causes more than with effects, read the akashic records, and see clairvoyantly. Therefore, its possessor can control the builders of low degree.
The “Eye of Shiva,” when perfected, is blue in color, and as our solar Logos is the “Blue Logos” so do His children occultly resemble Him; but this color must be interpreted esoterically…
It is through the medium of this “all-seeing eye” that the Adept can at any moment put Himself in touch with His disciples anywhere; that He can communicate with His compeers on the planet, on the polar opposite of our planet, and on the third planet which, with ours, forms a triangle; that He can, through the energy directed from it, control and direct the builders, and hold any thought form He may have created within His sphere of influence, and upon its intended path of service; and through His eye by means of directed energy currents He can help and stimulate His disciples or groups of men in any place at any time.”4

We Need Your Consent. . .
Who are we? We are you, your family from the stars, beings of God, of love and of the highest integrity. We are those who watch over you in your hours of need and whisper to you that all will be well. We inspire and assist your creations from the realms of the unseen and yet we are as real as you, in every way we are you. We are just a little more spiritually advanced, technologically and socially superior because we have already travelled this road you now walk upon. We offer you our most sincere assistance in this latest hour, this time when your Earth Changes can and by necessity will tear certain constructs apart.
Evil and those self serving men and women who vie for more power and control everyday over a generally unsuspecting masses cannot prevail. It is their time to fail and the time of the end of this evil influence upon your world. We do not condemn, nor attack any, we blame none, but we do hold responsible those for their choices and the effects of such choices. The time of a new balance, a restored balance is close at hand. World leaders will change in their actions or be plunged from their offices in most exceptional ways. Why? Because the great change is upon you, upon the entire planet.
The age of Golden Achievements cannot be detoured. The age of humanity, truth and the highest integrity cannot be withheld from its rightful place as the new law of the land. Please open your hearts and acknowledge our presence. Feel us here above your world, in vast ships and fleets ready to help. Our technologies are great and our achievements in energetics and electromagnetic activities well understood. Discordant vibrations sweep across your minds and your hearts. Too many people still cling to the outmoded dynamics of third dimensional laws and activities. Yet the planet has herself blossomed into a new evolutionary level of greater substance and power. She is now a fourth dimensional being, awaiting her children to catch up. To also take the step that is your destiny and achievement.
Your world has changed. Thoughts and consequences related to all thoughts are instantaneous. There is no lag time, nor a time to pull back and change direction. The crisp and clean designation of creation is in your thoughts in this moment. Take care and ultimate responsibility with these thoughts. They are your life blood and your greatest achievement or despair. Discipline your minds and your actions for this is the key to creating the happiness you seek.
Weak minds will create havoc and pain, so do not allow this to happen. The choice is yours; it has always been with you. The powers that control your land are at war. Evil men usurp government, earth resources and especially the minds of people everywhere with clever lies to ensure their own positions. Ask for the truth, demand it with the full weight of your hearts and nothing can be kept from you. No lie will be able to endure the scrutiny of a clear mind and heart which desires true knowledge.
Be aware that much on your planet is not as it seems. Many in power lie about energy, about resources and about the Earth Changes. Why Earth Changes? Because a great shift in evolution of all life is upon you and your world. Nothing can hold back or contain this rise in consciousness, yet many still cling to old ways, false ideas, the belief in the separation and division of all life. Life in every form under creation must be honored and given its proper due or great upheaval follows. Why? Because the disrespect of a life form always originates in the fearful heart of a creature in pain. Earth has been often referred to as a planet of sorrows, many exist in this galaxy alone, and yet her evolution has ended this place of her existence, of her self definition. She has successfully begun now a new life as a planet of joy, but first all life upon her must align with this goal or simply depart. For those who will depart to continue the old way, there are several third dimensional worlds ready to accept these souls as they migrate from the Earth’s new celestial song.
This galaxy is in celebration of a new Galactic Day and this means that all life everywhere within is elevating its status – in light, in more consciousness, in greater responsibility and creativity – closer to God all flows. We want you to know that the discordant ways of self serving violence, hostility, hate, the hand raised against neighbors, even family, will not be tolerated much longer. It is not that we, the peoples of other star systems will not tolerate such behavior and thoughts, it is that your own planet will no longer support them. Her consciousness has risen; she now holds only a more positive and peaceful vision, so those minds and men who disagree with this new vision must leave.
The age of evil, of pain and struggle is a breath from departing. The Earth may shake; she may rumble and explode through her fiery outlets. Yet this great turmoil of change need not destroy all foundations of man upon your world. You the people yourselves hold the key and the power to create and stabilize an easier transition than that which is currently at hand. The next 30 years are of vast importance because all will be decided within this time frame. You have more time than you think and yet you have not a moment to waste. Decide now your fate or it will be decided for you by power hungry individuals who do not care about you or your children. And their greed will pave the way for everyone everywhere on your planet to know the strain and rigors of an imbalanced transition.
Align your collective vision! We beseech you to rally together and discuss your future creation. Do you want war? Poverty? Illness? Violence and suffering? Or do you want achievement, the restoring of nature, new energies and Earth friendly technologies? Do you want a 30 year period of peace and balanced ideas founded within the innate integrity of humanity? Do you want us, your star neighbors and friends, to help you mitigate the most destructive of the climatic and earth movements and to show you, to give to you and your world, new models and systems based upon harmonious principles that align the goals of citizens with the needs of the planet herself? Do you wish to stabilize your ideas and world to enter in divine grace this new era of peace and happiness?
We beseech you to ask for our help. We must have your consent; we will by our own laws force nothing, absolutely nothing upon you and your world. But your world is being abused and usurped by corrupt leaders in every country upon your globe. Please pay attention to your own inner guidance, your own spiritual integrity which will point out to you deceptions. You must as a people decide to take off your weighty blinders to the true nature of affairs upon your world. We, the peoples of other worlds, call you our family. We know and understand your pain; it is too within our own collective memories and histories. This is why we are here. To help you in your darkest hour, to let you know you are not alone and that you need not walk blindly without proper directions.
But we need you to consent – to ask us to help. And then help we will in every way possible. It is not that you can not do this great change and step in evolution on your own, it is that you do not have too. Your strength and endurance have long ago been proven, so now is the opportunity to walk in brotherhood and camaraderie. To not build your new house alone, but to invite us to lend our assistance. Let us together create a new house with ease and efficiency.
Your galaxy awaits you and new adventures of the very best kind are at hand for your own civilization. Take heart in the knowledge that we are many and awaiting your greatest hour. We are here, within ships, above your world and we now await the moment of our grand unveiling. Let us know your position and we will honor this with the greatest respect. Most of the beings present for this great change upon the Earth are here to help in any and all ways. And those beings that are not are of no consequence at all. So be aware of our presence and use your own thoughts to communicate with us. We hear you clearly and await your choice.

To: Citizens of the World
“A New World If You Can Take It”
We, the individuals and institutions participating in and/or supporting the Extraterrestrial Civilizations & World Peace Conference in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, June 9-11, 2006,
Are a body of concerned private citizens who are promoting world peace and harmonious relations with extraterrestrial civilizations,
Recognizing the overwhelming evidence pointing to the presence of extraterrestrial civilizations, and their generally peaceful interaction with individuals and governmental authorities,
Inspired by the profound significance for humanity of sharing the wisdom, knowledge, culture and technology provided by extraterrestrial civilizations,
Asserting that extraterrestrial civilizations have been observing human evolution for some time with particular interest in humanity’s quest for lasting peace among its peoples,
Noting that extraterrestrial civilizations have indicated that the abolishment of nuclear weapons worldwide is a necessary milestone toward peaceful coexistence on earth and as a prerequisite for open contact,
Recalling United Nations resolutions concerning international co-operation in the peaceful exploration and use of outer space, banning atmospheric and underwater nuclear tests, and proscribing hostile acts on the moon and other celestial bodies,
Recognizing a range of initiatives promoted by private citizens and citizen organizations with regard to extraterrestrial civilizations visiting Earth,
Intending for this Declaration to be used as a starting point for a greater public dialogue with those holding similar or diverging perspectives and interests concerning extraterrestrial visitation,
Using a consensual decision making process among speakers, organizers, and participants at the Extraterrestrial Civilizations and World Peace Conference, 2006, we have agreed to,
Honor the following principles for establishing peaceful relations with extraterrestrial civilizations:
1. We affirm the intent of humanity to join in peaceful and cooperative relations with extraterrestrial civilizations,
2. Affirm support for United Nations resolutions promoting the peaceful use of Outer Space, and support for UN, International and U.S. Congressional initiatives to prevent an arms race in outer space, including the weaponization of space,
3. Affirm the natural right of all citizens to have open contact with representatives of extraterrestrial civilizations in all cases, and to engage in non-official diplomacy,
4. Declare the need for Civil Society to develop acceptable protocols (standards of behavior) with extraterrestrial civilizations, that the protocols should be representative of the aspirations of all humanity, and that all nations should work in concert to establish peaceful relations,
5. Cooperate with extraterrestrial civilizations in promoting Earth, Cosmic and Life friendly technologies, and encouraging the right use and open availability of these technologies,
6. Affirm our desire to coordinate the earth’s ecological health and biological diversity with extraterrestrial civilizations that can aid us in that endeavour,
7. And express our desire to welcome the open appearance of benevolent extraterrestrial civilizations.

"The God that made the world and all things therein, he, being Lord of
heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; neither is he
served by men's hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself
giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; and he made of one every
nation of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, having determined
their appointed seasons, and the bounds of their habitation; that they
should seek God, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though
he is not far from each one of us; for in him we live, and move, and have
our being; as certain even of your own poets have said."
Plotinus: “Many times it has happened: lifted out of the body into myself; becoming external to all other things; beholding a marvelous beauty; then more than ever, assured of community with the loftiest order; living the noblest life, acquiring identity with the Divine; poised above whatsoever is less than the Supreme; yet there comes the moment of descent, and after that sojourn in the Divine I ask myself how it happens that I can now be descending, and how did the soul ever enter my body, the soul which, even within the body, is the high thing it has shown itself to be. . . .
In the Cavern of Plato and the Cave of Empedocles I discern this universe, where the breaking of the fetters and the ascent from the depths are figures of the wayfaring of the soul towards the Intellectual Realm [Heaven]. In the Phadrus Plato makes a failing of the wings the cause of entry to this world; there are judgments, fates, and necessities driving other souls down to this order.
In all these explanations he finds guilt in the arrival of soul at body [it is called the “Cycle of Necessity” or “the Wheel of the law” in Hinduism and Buddhism, and is due to bad Karma-no one escapes retribution: interfere in someone else’s life, and your life will be interfered with in a similar manner the next time around]. But treating in the Timaeus of our universe he exalts it [the soul] and calls it a blessed god and holds that Soul was given it [existence/consciousness] by the goodness of the Creator to the end that the total of things might be possessed of intellect, for thus it cannot be except through Soul. In the same way the soul of each of us is sent that the universe may be complete.
This is how we come to read in the
Phadrus that our soul, entering into association with that complete Soul
and itself thus made perfect, walks the lofty ranges, and that as long as
it is neither inbound to body nor held in any sort of servitude, so long
it tranquilly bears its part in the governance of the All, exactly like
the World-Soul itself; for it suffers no hurt whatever by furnishing body
with the power to existence, since not every form of care for the
inferior need wrest the providing Soul from its own sure standing in the
Highest. . . ."
After the death of Plotinus, his pupil Porphyry took the fifty-four books that he had written and divided them into the six Enneads, the present form of his works. As it is impossible here to discuss the Enneads in detail, the student who desires to go more deeply into the subject is referred to the original edition of the Works of Plotinus, translated from the Greek by Thomas Taylor and published in London in 1794 and 1817, and also to a later translation by Kenneth Sylvan Guthrie. The words spoken by Plotinus in the following dialogue are direct quotations from these works.
Let us go back in imagination to the year A.D. 260, when Porphyry first met Plotinus. Amelius, a pupil of Plotinus, has offered to take Porphyry to the home of his Teacher. On a warm afternoon in the late spring, as the two friends approach the house of Plotinus, they hear the happy sound of children's voices.
PORPHYRY: "Is thy Teacher a married man, Amelius, or does he conduct a school for children?"
AMELIUS: "Neither, friend Porphyry. But Plotinus is a great lover of children and is always surrounded by them. So great is the admiration for Plotinus here in Rome that many wealthy families commit their children to his care. And so his house is always filled with children whom he educates with the greatest care and diligence."
The two friends enter Plotinus' house by means of a long narrow vestibule. On either side of the hall they see the bed-chambers and the room of the porter. In the center of the passage is a square shallow reservoir for rain water which pours from a hole in the roof. Passing through the vestibule they come into the atrium, a larger hall where visitors are received. In the corner they perceive a large wooden chest, ornamented and strengthened by strong bands of bronze and secured firmly to a stone pedestal, which is the money-box of the master of the house. The walls of the atrium are adorned with paintings, the colors of which are repeated in the mosaic floors. Passing through the atrium, the two friends find themselves in the peristyle. From the columns which surround it hang long festoons of garlands. In the center is the garden, where white marble vases holding rare flowers stand upon pedestals.
Plotinus rises from his seat as the two young men approach, sends away the small boy with whom he has been conversing and bids one of his servants bring some refreshment for his guests. In a moment they are regaled with delicious fresh figs served upon their own leaves, a delicious concoction of anchovies and eggs, and small cups of honey diluted and cooled with snow water. When they have finished their light repast a servant brings a silver basin of perfumed water and delicate linen napkins bordered with purple.
Porphyry is eager to begin his conversation with Plotinus. He knows that Plotinus is a Neoplatonist, and therefore realizes that he must start his inquiries with universal concepts. He seats himself before Plotinus.
PORPHYRY: "Amelius has told me, Plotinus, that I must gain my knowledge of philosophy through the understanding of universal principles. Therefore I ask thee: What is it that lies behind all manifested, conditioned existence? What is its nature? How can it be described?"
PLOTINUS: "Above all things there must be something which is simple. For if it be not completely simple, and be not really ONE, it cannot be Principle. The Principle of everything must therefore be the One and only."
PORPHYRY: "But the manifested universe is multiple and complex! Dost mean to tell me that the complex springs from the simple?"
PLOTINUS: "It is not possible for the Many to exist unless the One exists from which, or in which, they subsist; or, in short, unless there is a One which is prior to other things. The One is the First Principle of things."
PORPHYRY: "How, great Teacher, can the One be described? It seemeth to me that the One must transcend the power of human conception and could only be dwarfed by human expression or similitude!"
PLOTINUS: "How, indeed, can we speak of IT? We are indeed able to say something of It, but we cannot describe It. Nor have we any knowledge or intellectual perception of It. For we can say what It is not, but we cannot say what It is. We are not, however, prevented from possessing It, though we cannot say what It is."
PORPHYRY: "Could we speak of the One as Being?"
PLOTINUS: "The One is not Being, but Being is the progeny of It, and, as it were, the first-born. For It is prior to any particular thing. Hence It is really ineffable. Properly speaking, there is no name for It, because nothing can be asserted of It."
PORPHYRY: "Ah, I see! It is rather Be-ness than Be-ing. Has It then no relation to manifested, finite Being?"
PLOTINUS: "The One is all things, and yet no one of all. The One is all, because all things co-exist in It. But in It, they are not yet, but only will be."
PORPHYRY: "I understand. The One really represents a condition of potentiality! What, then, is its relation to Life itself?"
PLOTINUS: "It subsists above Life, and is the Cause of Life, since the energy of Life is not the First, but emanates from this Principle as from an ineffable fountain."
PORPHYRY: "Must I then conclude that this Principle, being above all, is not to be perceived in the manifested universe? Where is the One?"
PLOTINUS: "The One is everywhere. There is no space where It is not. Therefore It fills everything. It is by the One that everything exists. The One fills everything, and produces everything, without being that which It produces."
PORPHYRY: "But, Plotinus, thou knowest as well as I that the whole manifested universe is characterized by motion! Is Motion the One? Or is the potentiality of Motion a condition of rest? What is the relation of the One to rest and motion?"
PLOTINUS: "The One is superior to both rest and motion. It is the potentiality of both rest and motion, and consequently it is superior to both."
PORPHYRY: "Another thought occurs to me, great Teacher. The universe manifests intelligence. Can that which thou describest as the One be Intelligence itself? In other words, does the One think?"
PLOTINUS: "The One does not think, because it comprises both the thinker and the thought. The One is not Intelligence, but is superior to Intelligence. As it is superior to Intelligence, that which emanates must of necessity be intelligence."
PORPHYRY: "This Principle which underlies thy philosophy is indeed profound. I clearly see that the One transcends the power of human conception. Wilt thou not bring me down into regions which can be comprehended by my finite mind? What follows this condition of potentiality? How does the manifested universe come into existence?"
PLOTINUS: "Everything that exists after the One is derived from the One. But this second stage is no longer the ONE, but the multiple One. We see that all things that reach perfection cannot remain in an unmanifest condition, but must produce themselves in manifestation. This is seen throughout the whole of nature. Not only are beings capable of choice, but even those lacking in soul perception have a tendency to impart to other beings what is in them. As, for instance, fire emits heat; snow emits cold. Therefore all things in nature seek to reach immortality by the manifestation of their qualities. The One manifests Itself. That which is manifested also manifests itself in its own way."
PORPHYRY: "Ah, I see! Thou teachest the Doctrine of Emanations as the Gnostics do! But thou forgettest, Plotinus, that manifested things are made of matter. How can matter manifest itself?"
PLOTINUS: "Matter is not dead. Matter is not devoid of life or intelligence. One cannot exist without the other. Reciprocally, intelligible entities do not exist without the matter that makes them. Form and matter are principles that are necessary to the constitution of all things."
PORPHYRY: "I See, Plotinus. Thy theory is that Spirit, or Consciousness, and Matter are not to be regarded as independent realities, but as the two facets, or aspects, of the One, which constitute the basis of conditioned being, whether subjective or objective. But what about man? Is there something in man that corresponds to the One?"
PLOTINUS: "There must be another nature, different from the body, which possesses existence from itself. It is necessary that there should be a certain nature primarily vital, which is also necessarily indestructible and immortal, as being the Principle of Life to other things. It is necessary that there should be something which is the supplier of life, the supplier being external to, and beyond corporeal nature."
PORPHYRY: "Is that what men call the Soul? If so, what is the relation of the Soul to the One?"
PLOTINUS: "Soul is One, and in a certain respect the ONE. The soul which has more alliance with the One participates more abundantly in It."
PORPHYRY: "What is the nature of the Soul?"
PLOTINUS: "The Soul is not corporeal, as the Stoics taught. No aggregation of atoms could produce the Soul. The Soul is an incorporeal and immortal essence. The Soul imparts movement to everything else. She imparts life to the body. She alone possesses real life."
PORPHYRY: "What in thy opinion, is the relation of all Souls with the Universal World-Soul?"
PLOTINUS: "The Universe lies in the Soul that sustains it, and no part is destitute of Soul, being moistened with life like a net in water. If all souls be one in the Universal World-Soul, why should they not together form One? If both my soul and your soul proceed from the Universal World-Soul, then all Souls form but a single One."
PORPHYRY: "How then, Plotinus, wouldst thou define man? Is he fundamentally a Soul or does he only possess a Soul?"
PLOTINUS: "Man is a Soul. He has a body. The nature and essence of these must be divided. Since the body is a composite, reason shows that it cannot remain perpetually the same. Sense likewise shows that it is dissolved at death and receives various destructions, since each of the things inherent in it tends to its own, or to the whole from which it was derived. Soul is separable from the body. Nor yet is the soul in the body, as part of the whole. For soul is not a part of the body."
PORPHYRY: "But is the body not a part of us, Plotinus?"
PLOTINUS: "If the body is a part of us, we are not wholly immortal. But when we see correctly, we see that the body is only the instrument of the soul, and that the soul is the man himself."
PORPHYRY: "But, Plotinus, even though the body is only the instrument of the soul, it is an important one. We could not function without it!"
PLOTINUS: "We are not the body, but we are not entirely separated from it.
